Research interests/Areas of expertise

  • Application of molecular biology methods to the detection and characterisation of organisms of agricultural, horticultural & forestry significance.
  • Quality assurance in the laboratory.
  • Use of molecular methods in detection and quantification of GMO contamination of seed.

Biography

  • I joined SASA in 1995, and have worked on a variety of molecular biology projects. This has included potato cyst nematode identification, potato virus detection and characterization, detection and quantification of fungal pathogens, GMO detection, plant pathogen genomics, etc.
  • For the 10 years prior to joining SASA I worked on bacterial genetics research projects at the following universities:
  • University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1985-86) – Restriction-modification systems of bacteria.
    • University of Edinburgh (1986-87) – Chromosome partition in bacteria.
    • University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1987-90) – Plasmid replication in bacteria.
    • University of Warwick (1990-95) – Genetic systems of the plant pathogen Pectobacterium atrosepticum.
