Varietal Purity

Barley seeds

Few growers think about the VARIETAL PURITY of their farm-saved seed even although it is important regarding the marketability of the resultant crop. Consider for example the premiums paid for crops of varieties that are accepted for malt. Growers contemplating saving their own seed can get it tested for varietal identity and purity and they should consider this option especially if they have used the same seed for a number of years.

If you wish further information on varietal purity, please contact Gerry Hall in SASA's Cereal Certification Section (Phone 0131 244 8856).
