HOW TO REPORT PESTICIDE INCIDENTS

Incidents of suspected poisoning of animals in Scotland involving;

n

Wild birds and mammals

n

Companion animals

n

Livestock

n

Honeybees


should be notified to the WIIS scheme operated at SASA on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Samples may be submitted to the scheme by;

n

direct submission to the SASA laboratory

n

submission to the nearest Scottish Government Rural Payments and Inspections Directorate Area Office

n

via the regional SAC Veterinary Investigation Laboratories

n

submissions from Police Wildlife Officers

n

through informal partner organisations such as the RSPB and SSPCA

In the case of pets, ask your veterinary practice to refer the carcase, or relevant samples, to the local Veterinary Investigation Centre of the Scottish Agricultural College. (Other animals may also be submitted via this route).

Campaign against the illegal poisoning of animals


A government led campaign aimed at protecting some of the rarest birds of prey and wildlife, and safeguarding domestic animals established in 1991. Members of the public can report suspicions of illegal poisoning (abuse of pesticides) on a free phone number (0800 321 600). In Scotland this number is linked to the SASA laboratory during working hours, and out of hours messages can be recorded.
