Case-by-Case Investigations

The GM Inspectorate investigates incidents that are brought to the attention of the Regulatory Authorities, or are detected by the Inspectors themselves, where there might have been a breach of the consent or another enforcement issue.

Past issues incidents have involved:

  • Seed rates and number of plants of plants released
  • Cleaning of sowing machinery
  • The interval between harvesting a GM crop and ploughing of the release site.
  • Release of GMO material containing adventitious GM events which were not specified in the consent

Investigations are reported to the Scottish Executive and are summarised each year in the Annual Report . Enforcement action has led to the Inspectorate forwarding a case to the relevant Procurator Fiscal.
