Advice

SASA provides independent scientific advice to the Scottish Executive?s GM Co-ordination Team (the Scottish Executive policy unit with responsibility for GM issues) during the formation of GM policy. In particular SASA staff provide advice on notifications and applications under the GMO Contained Use and Deliberate Release Regulations.

SASA provides assessors who represent the interests of the Scottish Executive on the following committees and sub-committees concerned with genetic modification relevant to micro-organisms, vaccines and plants.

  • The Technical Sub Committee of the Advisory Committee on Genetic Modification (ACGM)

The Technical Sub Committee (TSC) provides detailed technical advice to ACGM and to HSE on scientific developments involving GM. Their advice includes emerging topic areas and detailed comments on the more complex notifications made under GMO (CU) and develops and maintains the ACGM Compendium of Guidance. The membership of the TSC is drawn from experts selected to reflect a range of technical areas and provide representation from interested stakeholders.

  • Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment, ACRE

ACRE is a statutory advisory committee that advises Scottish Ministers on risks to the human health and the environment arising from the release and marketing of genetically modified organisms. The committee also advises on the release of certain non-GM species of plants and animals, which are not native to Britain. The committee consists of independent experts, each specialising in a discipline required to assess the impact that biotechnology might have upon human health, agriculture and the environment.
