Research interests/Areas of expertise
- Characterisation, automated measurement (image analysis), photoperiodicity and genetics of Pisum, nomenclature and taxonomy of cultivated crop plants.
- Biodiversity of crop plants including regeneration and ex situ conservation (long term seed storage) of crop wild relatives, landraces and traditional varieties.
Biography
- Graduation in Natural Sciences (Botany) from Trinity College, Dublin University in 1972; started work on National List and Plant Breeders’ Rights testing in 1973 at the Agricultural Scientific Services of the Scottish Office located at East Craigs. Establishment and technical development of UK Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) testing for National List and Plant Breeders’ Rights and associated international and national technical protocols (1973 – 1991).
- Provision of advice to International organisations and to UK and Scottish government departments and stakeholders on plant variety registration and protection, seed marketing legislation, nomenclature, crop biodiversity and conservation.
- European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO): UK representative to the Vegetable Experts Group 2001-2010.
- International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV): Technical Working Party for Vegetables: Chairman 2006-2008; UK representative 1991-2010.
- EU Rapporteurs Group on Nomenclature in EU Seeds legislation: 2006.
- UK Vegetable DUS Centre: Chairman 1987-2011. Scottish representative: i) Vegetable DUS Group 1974-1987 ii) Miscellaneous Crops DUS Group 1975-1987.
- UK Plant Genetic Resources Group 1985-2010.
